BIO

Riivo Kruuk is an Estonian-American multidisciplinary artist based in Charleston, South Carolina. Born in 1998, he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Florida Atlantic University in 2020. His figures are richly adorned with embroidery-like patterns and bold abstractions, while also distorted and abstracted to become unrecognizable, creating a dynamic fusion of classical and contemporary art. Recurring elements, such as animals or symbolic forms, act as quiet counterparts to the human subjects. They introduce ambiguity rather than narrative, suggesting emotional states or psychological echoes rather than fixed meaning. The presence of these forms resists explanation, inviting viewers to sit with uncertainty.

Since relocating to Charleston in 2020, Kruuk has actively contributed to the city's vibrant art scene. His murals and exhibitions have been showcased both nationally and internationally, He has also participated in group exhibitions like the Piccolo Spoleto Juried Exhibition at City Gallery in Charleston, SC, and the RUA Mural Festival in Estonia.

Kruuk moves fluidly between graphic precision and painterly intuition. In some works, bold line and simplified form create an almost illustrative clarity; in others, layered paint, drips, and abrasions destabilize the image. This tension reflects an ongoing investigation into how we construct and recognize identity—how much is seen, and how much is projected.
